This is big news: Heroku free tier is going away

This is yuuuge, this morning Heroku sent an email saying that starting November 28, 2022, free Heroku Dynos, free Heroku Postgres, and free Heroku Data for Redis® will no longer be available. The free tier on Heroku has been the backbone of so many engineers learning how to code and so many founders whose platforms are still in beta. With no more free dynos/SQL/Redis, engineers, founders, students will have no option but to look for an alternative.

If you have sleeping sites on Heroku today, it seems that there is no grandfathering in a free plan, you might have to start paying for those or delete them from Heroku

Again, this is a huge hit to a lot of startups and new engineers who depend on Heroku. We need to find a way to deal with this change, no matter how much we dislike it. What do you think is the solution?

The following are some of the most common alternatives to Heroku:

- Google App Engine

- Amazon Web Services

- Microsoft Azure

- IBM Bluemix

While there are many alternatives to Heroku, nothing matches the simplicity of Heroku's cloud-based platform and deployment process.

A not so popular [yet] alternative:

A few years ago when render.com won the TechCrunch award, we were excited to learn there was finally something like Heroku. We haven’t had a chance to try it yet but looks very interesting. and may very well become our platform of choice. We’re excited to keep learning more about other alternatives out there. Render’s pricing is very similar to Heroku and they also have a $15/mo tier that includes 1 GB RAM. Check out their pricing here

Another alternative that provides a more develop friendly experience to “test” things out is

https://www.qovery.com/pricing, we’ve not had a chance to try that one yet but it seems they just connect to your AWS account and allow you to set up a test environment on the free tier of AWS. so what are they? just a better UI for AWS? Better cost management? more? Check them out and let us know.

This move by Heroku also opens this space up for other providers, Freemium model has always worked well for inbound marketing. The Rise of New Cloud PlatformsThis is a trend that we have been seeing in recent years and will continue to see in the future. This trend has led to a lot more providers than just AWS, Azure, and Google cloud. Can't wait for a new startup to emerge and reach the levels of success that Heroku did.
